The first report of Thiruvananthapuram Monorail project which is expected to be submitted on Tuesday by the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) will be submitted to Kerala State Government by Wednesday.
The Thiruvananthapuram Monorail is a rail-based mass rapid transit system proposed for the city. It is expected to condense the dependence on personalised modes of transport and estimated that 40 percent of the present vehicular traffic can be taken off the road. The State Government has entrusted NATPAC to conduct the feasibility study of the proposal to build a monorail system in the city.
The monorail corridor has been proposed for 41.80 km from Pallippuram to Neyyattinkara. The project will be implemented in two phases. The first phase is extending from Pallippuram to Thampanoor (22.20km) and the second phase from Thampanoor to Neyyattinkara (19.60km). Once the proposed monorail project comes, the transportation problem faced by the public will be resolved to a great extent.
According to a feasibility study carried by the NATPAC, the present number of travellers in an hour in one direction in the city is about 7500 and it will be increased up to 15000 in the next 10 years during the peak hours. As a best mode of transportation for medium-sized city like Thiruvananthapuram, the Monorail project can carry up to 20000 people in an hour in one direction during the peak hours.
The proposed project is estimated to cost Rs. 6,270 crore, taking into account the Rs. 150 crore needed for One km of the corridor and the cost of providing low-floor bus connectivity. Once the NATPAC report submits, the state government will have to take the necessary steps about the mode of implementation. The government is planning to setup a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for executing the mono-rail project. The Kerala Transport Development Finance Corporation Limited (KTDFC) is coordinating with the NATPAC and other agencies as the nodal agency for the project.
