Keeping all speculations aside, the Kerala government on Thursday decided to give charge of Kochi Metro Rail Project to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The project would be lead by former DMRC Managing Director E Sreedharan.

The decision was announced by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy after the meeting of planning commission.

Sreedharan, also a member of the state planning board, also attended the meeting. After the decision, Sreedharan said the work on the project would start within three months and will be completed in three years.

If Sreedharan is there, DMRC would be there, Oommen Chandy said. Sreedharan had earlier said that he will cooperate with the project only if the project is given to the DMRC.

For Kochi citizens, the Metro Rail is a dream project for the city. But for Keralites, it would be the new sign for socio-economic and lifestyle development.

The project is likely to boost the public transport system to the new high. As an alternative public transport, it would be a blessing for all the sections of society and would be generating career opportunities too.

The proposed project plans to set up around 25.253 kms of metro rail line.

Earlier, the major issues between Sreedharan and State government were about the involvement of DMRC and the global tender for the project for appointing general consultants.

Sreedharan had favoured DMRC by saying that it is able to start work within two months after getting sanction from the central government. The 'Metroman' also said he had spoken to Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) officials and they did not say any objection to providing financial support for the project.

The Managing Director of the company would be a representative of Kerala government and the chairman would be a person from central government.
